TL;DRReceived a long and confusing message? Paste the message into an AI chat and ask three things: What do I need to do? When do I need to do it? What is still unclear? Then compare the answer with the original message before you act.
This works for a long work chat, a school announcement, or a family update where the actual request is buried under background details.
Remove private details before pasting anything. Afterward, verify every task, date, and amount against the original message.
The Rule
Let AI organize the message, but never let it invent what the sender did not say.
That means the AI can separate facts, tasks, dates, and questions. You still compare its answer with the original before sending money, missing a deadline, or replying.
Copy This Prompt
Remove private details first, then paste the message below this prompt:
Turn the message below into:
>
1. a one-sentence summary; 2. a checklist of what I need to do; 3. every date, time, amount, and deadline mentioned; 4. questions I still need to ask because the message is unclear; and 5. a short, polite reply confirming my next step.
>
Use only information in the message. If something is missing, write "not stated" instead of guessing.
You can use this in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or another general AI chat tool. The exact wording matters less than the instruction not to guess.
An Everyday Example
Imagine your child's school sends this:
Good afternoon, parents. Friday's practice may move because the covered court is being used for an event. Students should still bring their costume and permission slip this week. We will confirm the final practice time tomorrow. Those who have not paid the P350 activity fee may send it through the class treasurer. Please reply so we know you received this.
The useful answer should look something like this:
Summary: Practice may move, but the costume, permission slip, activity fee, and acknowledgment still need attention.
Your checklist:
- Send the costume this week.
- Send the signed permission slip this week.
- Pay the P350 activity fee if it is still unpaid.
- Reply to confirm receipt.
- Watch for the final practice time tomorrow.
Still unclear: The exact practice time, the payment deadline, and how to send payment to the class treasurer were not stated.
Possible reply: "Received, thank you. I will send the costume and permission slip this week and wait for tomorrow's practice update. Could you also confirm the payment deadline and payment instructions?"
That is the win. The AI did not make the decision for you. It turned a block of text into something you can check and use.
Keep Private Details Out
Before pasting, replace names, phone numbers, addresses, account numbers, student IDs, passwords, medical details, and other sensitive information with labels such as [child], [school], or [account].
If the message involves money, health, legal instructions, travel documents, or an important deadline, verify every number and date in the original. AI can misread or omit details.
Try It Now
Find one message you have been postponing because it feels longer or messier than it should. Remove the private details, run the prompt, and see whether you can get from confusion to a checked reply in under five minutes.
If it works, save the prompt where you keep your other message templates. One tiny repeatable win is a better start with AI than learning fifty features you may never use.
